Behind the scenes, an essential figure ensures fairness: the invigilator. Their role is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the examination process. But what are their specific responsibilities?

What Are the Responsibilities of an Invigilator? Key Duties and Functions

The role of an invigilator encompasses a variety of tasks that extend far beyond merely monitoring students. Their involvement spans before, during, and after each examination, with each phase being critical for a seamless testing experience.

Pre-Exam Preparation: Laying the Groundwork for Success

Before students take their seats, invigilators are actively engaged in preparations. They organize the examination room to minimize opportunities for cheating. They distribute test papers and supplementary materials, verify student identities, and address any special requirements. Establishing a secure environment is essential for ensuring fairness in the testing process.

During the Exam: Upholding Order and Security

Throughout the examination, invigilators maintain vigilance over all participants. If they observe any instances of cheating, they are required to intervene. Should students have questions, the invigilator is available to assist. Their presence ensures that the testing environment remains equitable for everyone.

Post-Exam Procedures: Guaranteeing Accurate Collection and Reporting

After the examination concludes, invigilators are responsible for collecting the answer sheets. They ensure that all tests are accounted for and report any suspicious activities. Maintaining confidentiality is also a critical aspect of their role, as security is paramount at every stage of the process.

Essential Skills for Effective Invigilation

Being an effective invigilator requires more than mere observation. Certain personal attributes are invaluable. Skills such as communication, keen observation, and the ability to think quickly are essential.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Fostering Rapport and Authority

Clear communication is vital. Invigilators must articulate the rules in an understandable manner. A friendly demeanor and composed communication can help alleviate student anxiety. While they need to maintain order, they should also be approachable.
